Amidst the stark landscape of rural England, Maia and Harrison (19), digital influencers ensnared by their online personas and enormous success, withdraw to the confines of a secluded, modernist home in an attempt to protect their identities. But when their digital empire crumbles, their perfectly curated world begins to fall apart.
ATOM is a chilling odyssey into the depths of co-dependency and modern isolation, echoing the eerie intimacy of Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage and the psychological torment of Kubrick's The Shining.
Exploring the desperate loneliness and uncertainty which lies beneath the veneer of their perfected lifestyles, the film tracks Maia and Harrison’s increasing disconnection from their surroundings, from each other and from themselves.
Caught in a whirlwind of intense public scrutiny, Harrison's sudden banishment from his channels for posting inflammatory content and Maia's unexpected pregnancy thrust them into a maelstrom of self-discovery. In the suffocating embrace of their home, paranoia festers, and their once-intimate bond frays under the weight of jealousies and misunderstandings.
Yet, amidst the chaos, Maia's pregnancy becomes a shock of humanity, forcing them to confront their own vulnerabilities and the emptiness of their digital personas.
A poignant meditation on the fragility of the human condition in the digital age, ATOM is a relentlessly intimate exploration of narcissism, isolation and self-discovery, which challenges viewers to interrogate their own connections in our increasingly fragmented world.
